There are 5 pentatonic positions. When  you incorporate them in your playing you will more than likely find that "shredding" or playing very quickly, is now possible. Though good for shredding, knowing these five positions will prove very useful no matter what musical ear-candy you choose to create with it.

All tabs are for the G Pentatonic. It shouldn't take much to figure out each position in other keys as the patterns are the same.

G Minor Pentatonic Position 1:

|---------------------3-6----|
-----------------3-6--------
-------------3-5------------
---------3-5----------------
-----3-5--------------------
-3-6------------------------

G major Pentatonic Position 2:

---------------------6-8----
-----------------6-8--------
-------------5-7------------
---------5-8----------------
-----5-8--------------------
-6-8------------------------

G  Pentatonic Position 3:

--------------------------8-10----
---------------------8-11---------
----------------7-10--------------
-----------8-10-------------------
------8-10------------------------
-8-10-----------------------------

G Pentatonic Position 4:

-------------------------------10-13----
-------------------------11-13----------
-------------------10-12----------------
-------------10-12----------------------
-------10-13----------------------------
-10-13----------------------------------

G Pentatonic Position 5:

-------------------------------13-15----
-------------------------13-15----------
-------------------12-15----------------
-------------12-15----------------------
-------13-15----------------------------
-13-15----------------------------------

I have found that the best way to practice these in order to build up to "shredding" speed is to start out by playing the first 4 notes (On the Low E and A strings) of each position then switching to the next 4 notes (On the A and D strings) and playing them in each of the 5 positions and so on all the way to the last 4 notes (on the B and High E strings). It is then that you get out of seeing each position as a "box" or pattern of notes and see one big string of potential notes all the way down the finger board.

Practice, Practice, Practice and when you can't take it anymore play something that is fun for you to play but, try to incorporate a little of what you learn in everything you do.
