Effects Racks and other racks:

An effects rack (pictured below) is much like a pedal but usually a lot bigger and generally has more control and usually better sound processors. Which is why they are almost always more expensive.

A rack is usually rectangular, much like a DVD player but sometimes much larger depending on it's effect or function. The main reason it is called a "rack" or "Rack mount"  is because you can buy a thing called a rack, which is specifically made for holding your rack mount equipment. Imagine that!

Rack mount equipment is awesome because not only can you put it in racks and let everyone see your display of splendor, but also they are just plain useful, and sometimes even necessary.
