| Pentatonic Scale Harmonics Chord Building Warm-ups Licks
Before we begin with the Guitar warm-up: Playing your guitar can be thought of as a work out of sorts. The first thing that you should do when working out is stretching. I know, it may sound like overkill to some of you out there but believe me it WILL make a difference. Stretching and massaging your fingers and hands, as well as your wrists and arms get the blood pumping to the places where you need it the most. This allows you to move with far more ease, and with less chance of injuring your fingers and wrist due to repetitive movement injuries, like Carpel Tunnel.
First you want to massage each individual finger on both hands. Just start at the bottom of the finger and move to the tip. then move on to the next finger. Make sure to massage fingers on both hands. Now we'll stretch the wrists. Push the tips of your fingers back toward the top of your fore arm. Hold this for about 10 seconds. DO NOT over do it. Just push them back as far as it feels comfortable, we just want to stretch the wrists, not break them. Do this for both hands. Then place one hand on top of the other and push the hand down, toward the bottom of the forearm. Hold this stretch for about 10 seconds. Again, only push as far as it feels comfy. Do this for both hands. Now we'll just massage those wrists. Massage them good. Stretch your arms by putting your hand behind your head and push your elbow back. Or any other stretches you like. Now you're ready to play!
Warm-up #1 We are going to play a few warm-ups using the pentatonic scale as the basis so we can get you familiar with the scale. Here is how it goes: Title: Pentatonic WU1 Tuning: E A D G B E |-15--12---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |---------15--12-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |-----------------(b/)14--12--------------12----------------------------------------------------------------------| |----------------------------14--12--14------14------------------------------------------------------------------| |----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| (b/)=bend up Listen to Pentatonic WU1 The above was played in E Minor pentatonic incase you were wondering. We are just experimenting a little to get you used to the scale. This next warm-up will use the Chromatic scale, which is just a scale where every note is played in order, you'll see.
Warm-up #2 Title: Chromatic WU2 Tuning: E A D G B E |---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |-----------3-4-5-6---------4-5-6-7---------5-6-7-8---------6-7-8-9--10-9-8-7-----------9-8-7-6-----------| |---3-4-5-6---------4-5-6-7---------5-6-7-8---------6-7-8-9-------------------10-9-8-7----------9-8-7-6---| |---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |--8-7-6-5---------7-6-5-4---------6-5-4-3----------------------------------------------------------------| |----------8-7-6-5---------7-6-5-4---------6-5-4-3--------------------------------------------------------|
The fingering on the above should be obvious, but here it is from the first four notes in the warm-up: Index Finger=3, Middle Finger=4, Ring Finger=5, Pinky=6.-- When it reaches the point where it goes back down the scale, keep the same fingerings but you'll have to start with the pinky and end with the index finger. I know that was probably unnecessary but I don't want to leave anything unexplained.
